Understanding Health Insurance – Part II
October 5, 2008
I talked about in the earlier post that health insurance is a necessary part of any personal financial plan, as health care costs can be extremely high, and you never know when you might need these services. Typically health insurance falls into two main categories, indemnity (or reimbursement) plans and managed care plans.
Depending on your policy an indemnity plan will cover medical expenses in part or full, for a specified amount per day, over an agreed period of time and give you the option of choosing your own doctors. Managed care plans provide you with a much broader coverage in terms of what is covered and for how long, but the downside of this type of plan is that you will not be consulted regarding the doctors or hospitals involved in your healthcare.
A good health insurance policy should cover the basic following issues:
- Hospitalization costs include room, board and any additional services
- Full surgical costs including surgeon’s fees and any additional costs related to surgery.
- Doctor’s costs, including hospital visits or visits to the doctor’s surgery.
- Medications – your plan should cover the cost of all associated prescription drugs.
