Today I found that I am losing hair gradually as I am proceeding in my life years. I know this is the most common - male pattern baldness, which can’t be prevented. It’s an inherited disorder which comes from genes. But today I read a lot about hair loss ( or so called Alopecia in medical terminology ) and would like to share with you.

hair loss alopeciaCauses of Alopecia - There are various causes of hair loss. Some are

  • Hormonal changes
  • Stressful conditions
  • Side effects of various drugs
  • Radiation exposure
  • Chemotherapeutic drugs
  • Infection of scalp - fungal/bacterial
  • Chemical exposure
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • As a part of various syndromes

Also there are various types of alopecia

  • Alopecia Areata
  • Alopecia Totalis
  • Androgenic alopecia

So every care should be take to prevent hair loss as in many occasions it is not possible to treat the condition. All necessary steps to be taken against the cause I mentioned above.

Treatment of Hair loss :

Treatment depends on the cause of hair loss. Always consult a Dermatologist/Trichologist if you suffer from alopecia. Some of the treatment modalities are :

  • Topical Application of Minoxidil, Finasteride or Dutasteride
  • Antibiotics for infective conditions
  • Hair Replacement Surgery - includes various types. Use of Hairs from same person or donated hairs, hair transplants like strip incision, punch grafting, laser grafting etc.
  • Scalp Reduction and replacement - replacement of scalp skin with other hairy skin
  • Wigs or toupee.

Though hair loss doesn’t affect one’s health directory, but because of bad cosmesis it can lead to depression. So a complete assessment and investigations are required to find the cause of hair loss for the best treatment option. :-)
